Default What do rangers normally play as in a party

I'm trying to decide between a war, and a ranger.

I played a ranger way back when and all i did was damage dealing.

What do they primarily do now in most missions? Interrupt? Beast Master? Damage?

Oh, while I'm at it. Can rangers still run? I remember i got legendary cartographer on my ranger, I could do every run in the game with a build I had (dont remember it) Can they still run as well?

Only thing I've seen rangers do is splinter barrage or just barrage in PvE. I think anything else is considered (not by me) as a fun build. Hope that helps.

I think my favorite ranger build in pve is WS scythe, with dwarven stability and lightning reflexes. AoE deep wound every 3 seconds helps out your eles and whatever other damage dealers. You could also do like a spike ranger or something with glass, power shot, sloth hunter's shot, keen arrow, things like that if you want to deal damage or be an RaO thumper/axe.

I run a mix of crap.

Prepared shot/Asuran Scan/Triple Shot/Expert's Focus, and then SY! for the occasional 6 seconds of armor as some utility, I can't think of anything else to do on my ranger except frontline, which other classes do better.
Can also use marksman's wager stead of prepared.

Barrage/Incendiary+SY is always nice, although the degen isn't always needed, it's better than barrage.

Personally BHA is one of the shittiest elites to me, even with epidemic. Only way I bring it is with an extend conditions/Fevered dreams mesmer, epidemic has too small a radius to be useful, and single shot daze sucks.

Pets are iffy now, they still can't out dps a bow, but you can run them alongside frontlining builds for the utility from NRA, which helps on hammers/scythes

Burning arrow sucks in PvE, Glass is better, even expert's dexterity will get more use

As far as interrupts go in PvE...the only thing that'll be good is what I said above about BHA, the only thing you'll be able to efficiently dshot in HM is healing signet..which the monster would have most likely died from using. So casual interrupting will be extremely hard.

Most of the times i either play as a scythe-ranger or with Prepared Shot, Penetrating Attack, Sundering Attack and Asuran Scan.
On rare occasions also BHA+Volley and Epidemic/Splinter Weapon.

Also Spirit Spammer is viable.

Broad-head arrow rangers in pve are always welcome in my book. I'll kill squishies, heroes will keep us alive so he can get that damned ele boss hitting with aoe spells for 2k+ dmg

Or you can replace one skill for the whole point of BHA

Prot spirit.

And I can't say Ranger spirit spammers are viable, sure...they're as good as the wannabe eles, but they don't have SP, therefore lower armor spirits, therefore rits>rangers

Why do people say Rangers deal damage? They don't. I've spent time trying to get actual DPS out of my ranger, and failed miserably. The best I can find is: Triple Shot, Dual Shot, Sloth, Keen, Glass Arrows, Asura Scan, I am the Strongest! (plus Orders and Splinter Weapon)

Sure it deals 100+ damage every hit, but the recharge, flight time, and activation time (as well as energy issues) keep it from being an actual DPS build.

They deal nice spikes though.

Rangers deal damage via Barrage/Splinter for the most part when people talk about dealing damage in PvE.

Being able to spam it for an entire fight is significant pressure. Hitting for a total of up to 180 damage + Splinter damage every second or so is really significant.

Of course, there are many other builds that can deal significant damage.

My summoner build does a consistent 90-130dps against single targets for up to 15 seconds out of 30 for example, but it's not for those who can't run anything but pvx.

I usually Spear/BM if i want damage , manages 90-110 DPS constant for 180 secs with no energy problems (Obv thats against MoD with no outside buffs and gameplay results will vary wildly)

Other than that I run Prep Shot/Asura most commonly

Within a Party I also run as party support with R/D blindbot alot or Splinter Volley/BHA if the occasional group insists but im not that hot on BHA builds in general

Thanks, you guys pretty much answered my question.

But while this topic is here

Do rangers easily get accepted to most parties, and what's the best campaign to start off in?

Honestly? No.

Nothing really calls for a ranger anymore, most people can sub a ranger by just using the secondary for spirits. But there aren't any high end areas that have ranger oriented builds.

Any campaign.

Stuff that the Ranger is awesome at in PvP like caster shutdown is obsolete in PvE simply because it's easier to just blow the crap out of dangerous targets than mess around interrupting them. Heroes are better at that anyway.

Rangers are more fun. because you can randomly spam rupts and get 1/4's and its funny :P

Rangers fit into so many niches well.
In PvE, I think a Save Yourselves! spammer could do well.

Rangers typically run something along the lines of Barrage, albeit with Splinter Weapon, a conjure spell, or Great Dwarf Weapon, provided someone (preferably a ritualist) with a decent delver rank volunteers to bring it, which doesn't often happen unless the player if feeling generous. Prepared Shot makes for decent damage as well as energy management. As for beast mastery, if we're talking PvE here, then people would typically bring Enraged Lunge, since it hits hard and compliments other pet attacks that benefit from conditions, which Enraged Lunge does nowadays in PvE (deep wound + damage).

That's his opinion... I haven't had any problems finding parties for the past 3 years as a ranger... be it missions/quests/farming...

I don't agree with you. PS costs 10e and has 5 sec recharge, 19sec duration with 12 in protective prayers (with 20% enchants mod 22 sec). Counting that heroes in your party do not get the idea of splitting when heavy AoE is highly probable, you would have either to prot the whole party - which isn't reasonable - or to flag them all the time, taking care a hero is not standing in AoE. In an area with a lot of eles it doesn't sound that great to me. Plus BHA helps a lot with monks - monk bosses and parties with more then one monk can be a pain to kill in HM without a solid interrupt.
